Engage the “Hard to Reach”

Engage with community members and partners to connect with people who are not already participating.

Exclusion is often a result of poverty. Exclusion happens when people are left out because they do not have the money, time, education, experience, social support, clothing, equipment, transportation, etc, to participate.

Exclusion is unintentional, but it happens because our systems (like program evaluations, open houses and surveys) respond to those who are already involved.

Intentionally seek out those who do not get listened to, learn from them, and involve them in discussions and decisions.

It is time to re-frame our thinking. Are low-income people hard to reach? Or are our programs and services hard for them to reach?
