Raising Awareness to Opportunities for Physical Activity
The Community Based Awareness (CBA) initiative has awarded grants of up to $4,000 to support community leaders to launch marketing campaigns using the theme Active is What You Make It to raise awareness to the benefits of physical activity and promote local opportunities for getting active. Using the Marketing Action Plan (M.A.P.) the following groups will advertise community events, programs and initiatives that target 35 - 54 year old less active adults and inspire participation in physical activity.
PHASE 3 CAMPAIGNS (Winter/Spring 2010)
CBA awarded 21 BC communities grants in phase 3 of this program.
- SPIRIT BEAR SOCIETY, Abbotsford - Footsteps to Freedom: Spirit Bear Center Society (SBCS) is a non profit charitable organization operating a 10 bed Residential Wraparound Treatment Center for young Aboriginal girls (ages 13-18) living in the province of British Columbia. SBCS is launching a healthy campaign to raise awareness to staff, volunteers and clients about active living, healthy eating and living tobacco-free. The campaign will promote a walking initiative, dance event and daily physical activities.
- ABBOTSFORD CYCLING ACTION GROUP (ACAG) - Active Is - Cycling4Fun: ACAG is promoting a free program that encourages residents of Abbotsford to try cycling for fitness benefits and promote that cycling is fun and a great way to increase activity-levels.
- DISTRICT OF CHETWYND - Active is What You Make It Chetwynd!: Promotion of monthly events targeting 35-54 less active adults. The campaign will raise awareness to the “fun” and healthy aspect of each activity and residents will be encouraged to participate in organized and self-directed physical activities.
- TANSI FRIENDSHIP CENTRE SOCIETY, Chetwynd - Tansi Holistic Health Campaign: The campaign will promote the benefits of physical fitness and holistic health alternatives and motivate participants towards healthy lifestyles and wise choices. Promotion of health and wellness programming , workshops such as the Native Dance Group development, Walking Club, Healthy Heart for holistic well being.
- CITY OF CHILLIWACK - Meet Me at the Park: The campaign will encourage parents to get outdoors and use the City of Chilliwack and area parks and walking trails with their children and raise awareness to the importance of playing outside. It will also provide the opportunity to gather data on what families would like to see added or changed in their neighbourhood.
- ACTIVE COMOX VALLEY - Spring Meltdown: The Spring Meltdown is an annual, free campaign designed to help residents make a commitment to get active and stay motivated. Active Comox Valley will provide activity logs for citizens to track physical activity - activity ideas and incentive prizes will be offered. The campaign aims to increase participation levels by implementing promotions to the general population, workplaces and other target-specific populations such as those in rural areas, First Nations and low-income groups. The goal is to mobilize the population and educate them on how to stay motivated throughout the year.
- EARTHWISE SOCIETY, Delta - Ready, Set, Grow!: The “Ready, Set, Grow” campaign will encourage people to get active through involvement with gardening and growing healthy food. Messages will focus on the health benefits of gardening for physical exercise and healthy eating. Multiple communication channels will repeat simple messages that relate to our campaign logo “Active is Growing”. An emphasis on getting active as easy and fun and that gardening and growing food gives access to healthy food and opportunities for exercise. Specific programs that provide opportunities for participants to meet others, share knowledge, learn new skills, and build friendships will provide added incentives to get active.
- ESQUIMALT PARKS AND RECREATION - Active is YOU: Promotion of events and programs that highlight pursuits of active living (Lifemark Health Esquimalt 5K Fun Run and Walk, BTWW, Personal Training, Lifeguard competition, free community walking group. Promotions will occur through radio campaigns, creation and distribution of print materials (bookmarks), e-promotions through website, banner advertisements (Facebook, Twitter, Kids in Victoria, Senior Living).
- FORT ALCOHOL & DRUG COUNSELLING, Fort St. James - Walking for Wellness: Local Heroes: This campaign will promote walking programs currently underway in Fort St. James and is designed to encourage adults between the ages of 34 and 55 to get involved with a walking program. The campaign will use M.A.P. tools to promote walking activities, and create new complementary posters and newspaper stories featuring individuals in the community who have become active later in life and who have demonstrated that getting active has changed their life.
- GITXSAN HEALTH SOCIETY, Hazelton - Active is Holistic Health & Healing in Action: To promote physical activity to youth, young adults, and seniors with an enjoyable and effective exercise program that contributes to their overall wellness. Promotion of traditional Eastern Holistic Health practices of Yoga, Tai Chi, Primitive Tribal Drumming and Dance to create healthy and joyful lifestyles.
- GITANMAAX BAND OFFICE, Hazelton (Gitanmaax) - Brighter Futures: The Brighter Futures program provides structured healthy opportunities and choices for the members of the Gitanmaax community and the surrounding Hazelton area. The campaign aims to increase the number of members of the community that participate in physical activity.
- HORNBY ISLAND RESIDENTS & RATEPAYERS ASSOCIATION - Be Active, Stay Healthy & Have Fun: The campaign will raise awareness to all the physical activities available on the island as well as Vancouver Island. A network of persons will be created to assist with transportation and work as mentors to encouraging people to become more active. The campaign will promote access to low cost or no cost activities and education and the benefits of being active.
- T’KEMLUPS (KAMLOOPS) INDIAN RESERVATION - Get Moving T’kemlups!: The Get Moving T’kemlups campaign will promote a free program aimed at helping people become more physically active and make healthier life choices. The campaign will promote health, wellness and active living.
- LADYSMITH PARKS, RECREATION & CULTURE - Active Ladysmith: Targeting inactive adults to stay active and be positive role models for children and older adults. Promote awareness of community events, benefits of physical activity, and increase participation in programs and active living.
- METIS NATION BRITISH COLUMBIA (MNBC), Lower Mainland - Metis Women’s Health and Physical Activity Campaign: Targeting women in the winter season in conjunction with the Women’s Helth Conference - Metis Women’s Health through Lifespan in March 2010. Metis women play a crucial role in the health and well-being of Metis communities. Promotion of opportunities that increase knowledge of women’s health, increase access and participation to sports programming and improve the health status of Metis women.
- BC MULTICULTURAL HEALTH SERVICES SOCIETY, Metro Vancouver - Diversity Moves: A targeted multi-media approach to increase awareness of the health benefits of physical activity to new immigrants and refugees in Vancouver. The campaign will promote a healthy and active lifestyle to immigrant and refugee families at established community groups and incorporate MAP tools into group and community settings. Workshop facilitators will include MAP messaging in their regular programming. Language specific posters, pamphlets and swag will be displayed and distributed and active living events will be organized and promoted.
- RECREATION AND PARKS DEPARTMENT FOR THE REGIONAL DISTRICT OF NANAIMO - Get Active Area ‘A’: Promote opportunities for adults to get active and maximize their potential for participation. This campaign will communicate to the target audience using the Area A web page of the Regional District of Nanaimo website, distribute an e-newsletter and letter introducing the new Recreation Programmer to the community, providing her contact information and inviting the community to sign up for the e-newsletter and come out to programs and events.
- CITY OF NEW WESTMINSTER - PARKS, CULTURES AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT - Active Is…New Westminster!: This campaign is the next step for New Westminster. Our original marketing campaign helped to spread the general “Get Active” message and the next step is to promote the variety, quality, and flexibility of the New Westminster Parks and Recreation programs that are aimed at adults in the 35 – 54 year-old group. Ten inspiring individuals will be chosen to highlight, their success stories will motivate and encourage others to join them on the path towards wellness!
- CITY OF QUESNEL - Love our Winter, Get Outside!: This campaign will coordinate and promote the City-wide Winter Carnival in February. It promotes outdoor activity by lending sports equipment free of charge, hosting winter sport demonstrations, and developing an outdoor pond for skating, a trail for cross country skiing, etc. Promotional materials will raise awareness to the wealth of recreation activities provided by the Leisure Services Department of the City. A Social Inclusion Community Needs Assessment project will also be developed and coordinated as a part of the campaign, the goal of the project will be to determine what our residents want to do to stay fit and healthy, what is important to them, and what do they need to do to do these activities.
- KLA HOW EYA ABORIGINAL CENTRE OF SACS, Surrey - Circle of Wellness Program: Promotion of Circle of Wellness (Health and Wellness program) and providing Kla how eya Aboriginal Centre staff and clients healthy alternatives to a Tobacco free, healthy active life. The campaign will implement cultural awareness to both aboriginal and non aboriginal participants. The goal is to motivate and support a healthy life physically and spiritually based on the Medicine Wheel Teachings.
- DISTRICT OF TUMBLER RIDGE - Building Community Awareness in Tumbler Ridge: This campaign will raise awareness to the benefits of physical activity and motivate community residents to get active and engage in a lifestyle of health and physical activity. Residents will be encouraged to utilize the trail systems in the area and attend fitness sessions offered at the Tumbler Ridge Community Centre. This campaign will be designed to increase attendance in these programs and provide an opportunity for patrons to get active.
